Philip D. Lanum

Woodinville, WA - United States

I started in photography at the age of 12 years when my father bought a single roll of film for my Mom's Kodak Brownie. Purchased three 35mm SLR's during high school and college, I wanted to become a National Geographic Photographer; but life intruded. My father built a darkroom in the basement and we developed our B&W film, purchased in 100 foot rolls, got into color printing from slides too. I have still have the enlarger and will be using it "real soon now". I earned two degrees; BA in Anthropology (figured it would help with Photography) and a BS is computer science (pay the bills). After I graduated from college, got married and earned my second degree, we moved out to Washington State and started our family. I had all of my 35mm (three) SLR cameras stolen during our first week in our first house. Insurance provided a Pentax SF1. (Got all of the stolen cameras back five years later and they still work) After moving into our current residence, during one of our clean out the garage fests we discovered that all my B&W negatives were damaged beyond repair. I lost 20+ years of film and became very depressed. I noticed an advertisement for a National Geographic photo workshop - my wife said "Go do this -- NOW" - have not looked back. I purchased my *ist DS for use during the workshop and I have been nearly all digital since, but I still love film. To Paraphrase: "I love the smell of Ektachrome in the morning" I am a confirmed peeling paint, rust and garbage can photographer.
